The imposing but graceful mass of the 14C Gatehouse, battlemented and richly decorated, dominates the humble buildings on the market place. Most of the great Benedictine abbey was destroyed with the Dissolution of the Monasteries although its outlines can be traced among the remaining fragments and the impressive ruins of the monks' dormitory still identified. The best-preserved section is the west side of the cloister, now part of a private school.
