The Minster took two centuries to build (1220-1420) and stands on the vestiges of a church where John of Beverley, Bishop of Hexham and York lies in rest. The Minster is 101 m long, almost the size of a cathedral. Building began at the east end in the Gothic Early English and Decorated style, while the tall windows and the façade completed in 1420 reflect the transition to Gothic Perpendicular.
