From Porthmadog, on the coast, to the "city of slate", the Ffestiniog Railway, built in 1836 to transport slate from the quarry to the port, is today a tourist attraction in the region of Snowdon where the wooded Vale of Ffestiniog, scattered with lakes and waterfalls, is superb.
