The houses rising up the hillside above the River Avon give the town its charm. The largest houses built in the creamy-yellow local stone reflect the affluence of the 17C and 18C drapers, when the town was a prosperous textile centre. Built in 1610, the nine-arch bridge has small domed lock-up topped by a weather vane which is a good setting-off point for a stroll around town.
