The sea front promenade is supported by huge brick arches and a series of ramps and steps lead down to the beach. A wealth of light-hearted detail, from splendid decorative ironwork to delightful bandstands and shelters, sets the holiday mood which extends over the sea on the West Pier, built in 1866 and restored to its Victorian splendour and the more recent Palace Pier, given over to entertainment and refreshments.
