Bucklers Hard
: Michelin's recommendations
The charming hamlet comprises a single, very wide street, lined with 18C cottages running down to the River Beaulieu. Around 1740 the village became a shipbuilding centre for the Portsmouth Royal Dockyard. It declined when iron replaced wood in the shipbuilding industry. In the 20C, Buckler's Hard attracted numerous yachtsmen, notably Francis Chichester (1901-1972), whose circumnavigation of the world began and ended in this little port.
