New St Michael's : Michelin's recommendations
The majestic porch was designed to link the new cathedral with the ruins of the old and dramatically expresses the meaning of death and resurrection. The sober lines of the nave enhance the sculpture of St Michael Defeating the Devil by Jacob Epstein. The overwhelming impression of the interior is one of height, light and colour: height from the soaring slender pillars of the nave supporting the canopied roof, a masterpiece of design by the Cathedral's architect, Sir Basil Spence; light from the great west screen, a wall of glass engraved with patriarchs, prophets, saints and angels by John Hutton; colour from the Baptistery window by John Piper. The font is the oldest piece, a huge rough boulder taken from a Bethlehem hillside. The whole is dominated by the huge tapestry, Christ in Glory, by Graham Sutherland. The various Chapels, -the Lady Chapel, the Chapel of Christ at Gethsemane, the Chapel of Christ the Servant and the Chapel of Unity all have remarkable features.
