The town centre contains a number of interesting buildings: the 19C Corn Exchange, opposing the wide Market Place which grew around the flourishing sheep trade, the Old Town Hall (1750), the elegant Georgian Town Hall (1808), half-timbered, corbelled Elizabethan houses in St John's Alley, Parnella House (1740) and the old, dark street known as The Shambles where a market is still held today.
