Castle Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

The romanesque architecture of the castle has often been changed, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle is part of Durham University, and its keep was turned into a university residence for students in 1840. Inside, the upper levels are reached via an impressive black staircase (1662). The romanesque chapel seems to come from a primitive age: its close-together columns have sandstone capitals that are decorated with strange shapes and grimacing faces.
