Guildford is located at the convergence of trading routes and its wealth was based on the wool industry from the Middle Ages until the 17C. The elegant cobbled High Street, running down to the River Wey and towards the green slopes of the Mount beyond, demonstrates Guildford's 18C prosperity, when travellers crowded its coaching inns on their way between Portsmouth and London. Since the mid-20C, Guildford has also been a university town.
