Bishop Roger of Salisbury's first enclosure wall was certainly completed by the time the priory was founded in about 1130, though the present castle dates from the 1280s. The ramparts created a Norman walled town like those found at Conwy and Caernarfon in North Wales. St Mary's Church, built in about 1320 in the Decorated Gothic style, was once part of a Benedictine monastery.
