Bibendum
The city, which is contained within the boundaries of what's left of the old London wall, stretches along the North bank of the Thames . The Great Fire which started in the bakehouse of king's bakery, helped by the dry conditions and speeded by the wind, spread across the rest of the City (Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn have provided an account of the disaster. Not many people died in the fire, but the damage was great. It destroyed St.Pauls cathedral and 89 churches, left 13 200 houses in ruins, devastated 400 streets and wiped out 4/5 of the city. Appointed by Charles II, Christopher Wren, put a redevelopment plan together. He gave himself fully to the task, rebuilding 51 churches and St.Pauls cathedral. In the 16C, the city was comprised of businessmen, bankers craftsman and attracted writers, artists and printers (Fleet Street). Intersected by the wide 19C streets, rebuilt after the 1841 bombings and modernised in the 20C, it welcomes 4 million workers a day, whilst there are only 8000 actual residents, half of which live in the Barbican area. For centuries, the City has been one of the worlds main financial centres. Its financial role is headed by the presence of the Bank of England the Stock Exchange and Lloyd's «who insure everything but life»
