Built in 1951 under the auspices of the Greater London Council this is amongst the most successful architectural creations specially designed for music. It comprises a great concert hall with 3000 seats and has marvellous acoustics, a room for chamber music, a ballroom and a restaurant. Nevertheless it was necessary to insulate the building from the noise of Waterloo station and redesign the facade facing the river to integrate into it the main door.
