Begun by Roger de Lacy, the castle was built on a fine defensive site protected by the River Teme and low limestone cliffs. Roger Mortimer, the most powerful and perhaps the richest man in all England, virtually ruled the country after overthrowing Edward II in 1326. He completed the buildings and made them into one of the most admired palaces of the day. The chapel is one of only five round chapels in Britain.
