The castle where King John died (1216) and King Charles gave up his struggle was raised by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln. It was besieged during the Civil War; the keep overlooking the Trent has not survived but there are traces of the 12C gateway, the 13C west wall and the central and northwest towers. The exhibition in the Gilstrap Centre traces the history of the castle.
