Today, Peterborough is a high-tech city, focused on finance, engineering and brick manufacture, and most of its buildings are brick-built. Its population has doubled in 20 years. A pedestrian area has replaced the old city centre, but developers spared its Cathedral, fine 17C Guildhall, Perpendicular-style Church of St John the Baptist in Cowgate and some Georgian houses in Priestgate.
