At the southernmost tip of the island stands the castle, built by Henry VII in 1544-1545 as part of the chain of forts protecting the ports along the south and east coast. The central keep, surrounded by a dry moat, is mainly Tudor. Inside is an exhibition tracing the expansion of Portsmouth's fortifications.
