Restored in 1963, it is the only Georgian theatre in the country with its original form and features. It was opened on 2 September 1787 and was used for many years from the 1840s as an auction room.

The museum, which is housed in Holy Trinity Church, was opened in 1973 by the Colonel in Chief, the late King Olaf of Norway; displays include uniforms, medals, campaign relics, weapons, badges and paintings from 1688 to the present day.

The castle stands on a cliff edge high above the river. It was begun by Alan the Red in 1071, the probable date of the masonry of the curtain walls. It played only a small part in the history of England as it was left untouched by the War of the Rose..
