: Michelin's recommendations
The early curtain walls were built by Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester and architect of Rochester Cathedral. The present keep was built in 1127 by William of Corbeil, Archbishop of Canterbury, and its ruins are an outstanding example of Norman military architecture. Note the decoration on the arches, the great hall and 13C bastions.
