Cathedral : Michelin's recommendations
Bishop Gundulf (1024-1108) held England's second episcopal see from 1077 until he died in 1108. The cathedral was subsequently extended on two occasions and is mostly 12 and 13C. The Norman west front, rich in blind arcading and its centrepiece, the exuberantly sculptured west doorway (1160) show a strong French influence. Beyond the six Norman nave bays, the cathedral is essentially Early English. Note the carvings on the chapter room doorway (c 1350) and the west end of the crypt which is part of Gundulf's original work. On the north side is Gundulf's Tower (c 1100) and to the south, the ruins of the 12C cloisters.
