Sandwich
: Michelin's recommendations
This fascinating medieval town, still partly surrounded by its earthen ramparts, seems to have changed little since the River Stour began to silt up in the 15C. The houses of all periods huddle around its three churches: St Clement's, flanked by a Norman arcaded tower, St Peter's, crowned with a Flemish-type dome, and St Mary's. Note also the picturesque barbican guarding the river crossing and the medieval Fishermen's Gate on the quayside.
