Founded by Cistercians in 118, St Mary's is the old parish church of Scarborough. Anne Bronte, who died in 1849, is buried in the cemetery.
During the 19C, many locals and holidaymakers would come to St-Martin-on-the-Hill, one of the finest religious buildings designed by George Frederick Bodley (1827-1907), with a remarkable collection of Pre-Raphaelite religious art.
