This handsome market cross, adorned with a unicorn, frieze, medallion portraits and coats of arms, dates from 1686. It stands at the old centre of the town where all public punishments and proclamations took place. Its name is a reminder that in the Middle Ages the market was held at Castlegate, meaning the gait (gata means path in Viking) leading to the castle.
