Norse sanctuary
Norse sanctuary : Michelin's recommendations
Brough church, probably dating back to the early 12C, has a small oblong nave, a short narrow chancel and rounded apse. It is situated in an enclosed area which was once the cemetery. Excavations have revealed Pictish and Norse tombs, including the Birsay stone (a replica) inscribed with armed Norse warriors. On the northern side of the church can be seen the living quarters of the priests, around a courtyard.
