The tolbooth belfry (1598) overlooks the wide market square with a fish-shaped weather vane, a reference to the time when smoked haddock was the town's main source of income. Behind the tolbooth is a small museum of local history, architecture and various activities. Set in greenery, Market Gate is lined with interesting elegant buildings dating from the 16-19C, some with two storeys and others with three.
