Newbattle Abbey : Michelin's recommendations
On the western banks of the South Esk stands the building that covers the remains of a Cistercian abbey, part of Melrose Abbey, founded by David I in 1440. The monks were the first to make use of local coal deposits and extended their activities to salt making, leading the way for agricultural techniques. The monks' skills made the abbey one of the most powerful in Scotland. Today, it is occupied by a College.
