In the course of Scottish history, this fortress belonged to the Vau, Halyburton and Ruthven families and met the same fate as its neighbour, Tantallon Castle, which was besieged by Cromwell's soldiers in 1650. Perched on a rocky mound, the castle has charming gardens with a beehive-shaped dovecote at the bottom.
