The verse "Rome was built on seven hills, Dufftown stands on seven stills" still rings true today, as the town remains the capital of the malt whisky industry. This charming little town was founded in 1817 by James Duff, 4th Earl of Fife, in order to create jobs after the Napoleonic Wars; the first of its many distilleries was built in 1823.
