Durisdeer : Michelin's recommendations
This hamlet stands at the foot of the Lowther Hills and the bell tower of its church can be seen for miles around. Inside, the Queensberry aisle houses the Queensberry Marbles, a sophisticated monument by John Nost (1686-1729) erected in memory of the second Duke of Queensberry. Both the nonchalant figure of the duke and his duchess (in a recumbent pose of sumptuous elegance) have been reproduced with astonishing delicacy in white marble.
