Cape Wrath : Michelin's recommendations

Cape Wrath stands west of Durness and marks the extreme northwest of Scotland. Protected by the Clo Mor cliffs, which, at 281m high, are the highest in Britain, the cape is home to a colony of seabirds. To get here, you take the ferryboat from Keodale, then a minibus across the bleak moorland. You will be rewarded by the outstanding views extending out to sea beyond the lighthouse. To the south lies the wonderfully rugged area of the Parbh.

    Pros

The Cape Wrath lighthouse (built in 1828) stands over one hundred and twenty one metres high above mean sea level on spectacular cliffs facing the stormy Atlantic Ocean. The buildings are extensive and spacious, surrounded by a high wall. The white tower is twenty metres high with eighty one steps to the top. The tower is built of hand dressed stone and the rest of the building is constructed of large blocks of granite quarried from Clash Carnoch. On the 1st of June, 2009, The Ozone Café - which is the remotest café on mainland Britain, was opened for business for the very first time in one of the lighhouse buildings. Since then, it has never closed - open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
