The "Sage of Chelsea" (one of the names given to Carlyle) refused to be buried in Westminster Abbey, wishing instead to lie in rest next to his mother. The cemetery also contains the grave of Dr Archibald Arnott, who administered to Napoleon on St Helena. A statue in memory of Carlyle, by Boehm, stands at the north end of the village.
