This section of the castle dates from the 15C and houses the royal apartments. The interior was remodelled in 1617 for James VI and I. While Queen Mary’s room certainly merits a look, the Crown Room on the first floor is exceptional. Note the crown encrusted with pearls and precious stones, the sceptre and sword given to James IV by popes Alexander VI and Julius II, and the Stone of Destiny, upon which Scotland’s monarchs were seated during the coronation ceremony.
