Some say that Elgin Cathedral (1270) was the finest in Scotland. Its beige ruins now stand as a monument to its former beauty and are reminiscent of the intensive period of church building, the 13C. Ravaged by fire in 1390 and subjected to other damage, the cathedral continued to deteriorate after the Reformation until it was almost destroyed. Conservation only began in the 19C.
