Fort Augustus : Michelin's recommendations
This little town at the southern end of Loch Ness strides the Caledonian Canal, linking several lochs and forming a passage between the Atlantic and the North Sea. Watching the locks in action is itself an interesting sight. But beware, the town becomes a bottleneck in summer as traffic negotiates its swing bridge. Don’t miss Fort Augustus Abbey on Loch Ness, given to the Benedictines in 1867. This Catholic community has an educational mission and runs a senior school. The abbey church is modern.
