This snow-covered mass of granite (1,344 m altitude) is the highest mountain in Britain, but it is not a smooth climb. It is however very popular with walkers and climbers alike and at the summit, there is a war memorial. There was once a hotel here (closed in 1915) and an observatory (1883-1904). They say that if the snow on the summit ever melted, Ben Nevis would become a Crown property again.
