A road heads from Fort William and follows the southern flanks of the mountain for 17km before reaching the foot of Ben Nevis. This monumental landscape (surprising so close to a drab town centre) has appeared in films like Highlander and Braveheart. Visitors can continue by car, or take an easy footpath (10km there and back) crossing gorges and moorland and passing waterfalls. The upper section of the river is a venue for canoe and kayak events.
