It was in this dark, grandiose setting that the infamous Glen Coe massacre of the MacDonald clan took place. The MacDonald clan (supporters of the Stuarts) were massacred by the Campbells in 1692 (supporters of the Whigs) who had sworn allegiance to the British Crown in exchange for a pardon. The 18km-long valley finishes at Loch Leven after taking in the Three Sisters, outliers of the Bidean nam Blan (Peak of the Bens) soaring to 1 141m, and the serrated ridge of Anoach Eagach. The flat-topped rock, the Study, pinpoints the head of Glen Coe.
