Founded in the 16C, the small port of Helmsdale acquired its 19C character when the Sutherlands of Dunrobin Castle expanded it in order to enable Highland smallholders who had lost their land to diversify into maritime activities. Around 1860 there were about 300 ships moored in what is today a quiet little port.
