In the 16C a day and night watch was kept at the 17m-high Smailholm Tower, which stands a few kilometres west of Kelso. At the time it was part of a network of towers used for the same purpose. The interior houses a collection of dolls representing characters from the Border ballads. The top of the tower commands a splendid panorama of the area with its patchwork of arable farmland.
