The village stands on Loch Tay's far eastern shore, where the River Tay has its source. Close to this model village, the Campbells of Glenorchy built their main stronghold, Taymouth Castle (private), in the early 19C. It was from here and the earlier Balloch Castle that the Campbell of Breadalbane dynasty presided over vast estates.
