Hunterston Nuclear Power Station is in the middle of a vast industrial zone. Opened in 1964 it was one of the first generation Magnox Reactors. A second nuclear power station, an advanced gas-cooled reactor, was built three years later. Together these nuclear power stations play a vital role in the country's economy. Nearby is the holiday resort of Fairlie, famous for its yacht building yards.
