Torphichen : Michelin's recommendations
The village of Torphichen has the remains of the Preceptory of the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. David I founded the order's first establishment here in 1153; supressed in 1554, it became a private estate (granted to the last prior). The sovereign Order of Malta was re-established in England in 1831, and the Protestant Order of St John recognised by a royal charter in 1888. A Scottish priory was created in 1947.
