This scattered village was the centre of a flourishing mining industry. The site’s rich mineral potential was probably known as far back as Roman times. It is also said that local gold was used to produce James I's crown and coinage. Lead ore was mined and smelted locally between 1680 and 1934, an activity which was revived in the 1950s.
