Loch Awe is 40km long. In pre-glacial times, the loch had its outlet in the south. Today it is in the north-west: the loch drains via the River Awe and the Pass of Brander. It is in the heart of Campbell country, home of the famous Scottish clan. Near the village of Lochawe, the romantic ruins of Kilchurn Castle can be seen standing on a spit of land.
