The Park covers 1 400km² from Homlfirth in the north to Ashbourne in the south, Macclesfield in the west and Sheffield in the east. Dark limestone, moorland and the precipitous outcrops of the Dark Park (highest point at Kinder Scout, 636m) comprise the north, while to the south the stone is lighter on White Peak. Drystone walls and spectacular steep-sided vales make up this particularly pastoral plateau. Given the range of landscapes, the region affords a wide choice of activities including walking, climbing, pot-holing and visits to stately homes.
