Church of St Mary The Virgin Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

This splendid pink sandstone church possesses a handsome carved wooden ceiling (15C), together with superb stained-glass windows including the huge Tree of Jesse, the major part of which dates from the 14C. In 1894, following a bad storm, the bell tower collapsed, prompting the vicar to give a sermon in which he interpreted this act as the wrath of God on the city that was preparing to raise a statue to one of its most famous sons, Charles Darwin (1809-1882). The church nonetheless now features a small exhibition devoted to Darwin, his family and their links with Shrewsbury.
