Taunton is an agricultural and commercial centre at the heart of the fertile Vale of Taunton (Taunton Deane), a cider apple area. It is also home to the Somerset County Cricket Ground (Priory Street), complete with its Cricket Museum.

  • In true Somerset tradition, this splendid medieval church has a slender tower built of the red and golden Ham Hill stone. The bosses and angels carved in the roofwork are typical examples of local craftmanship.

    Taunton Castle

    Dating from the 11-12C, it is well known for being the property of the bishops of Winchester. During the Civil War, Taunton and its castle were under siege on three occasions. Part of it now houses the Somerset County Museum.
