Subtropical gardens
: Michelin's recommendations
Augustus Smith was "lord owner" in 1834 of this land and built a Victorian neo-gothic style house using stone from the island and wood from shipwrecks to create the famous subtropical gardens of the abbey, using seeds and plants from the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. His successors extended this fascinating collection. From the terraces, there is a magnificent view over the gardens and sea.
