The cathedral stands in the place of the old Saxon cathedral from the 7C, whose foundations were discovered in 1960. William Alkaline, named bishop by William I, began building the new cathedral in 1079. Built from stone from the Isle of Wight, the longest gothic cathedral in Europe (169 m) took on its definitive shape in 1528.
