Elegant Georgian house in landscaped grounds, with antique furniture, traditional country house styling and some lovely oil paintings. Classically based dishes make use of seasonal produce from the walled kitchen garden; professional service.       Pros

      The restaurant is in a very pleasant setting, and this is generally matched by the service. There is a good selection of wines below £30.

      Cons

      The positive effect of the wine pricing was unfortunately offset by that of the food. For £60 for three courses, one might expect a level of cooking beyond the competent, plus some "extras". The only extra offered here was an amuse bouche of warm courgette soup enriched with parmesan, not suited to one of the hottest nights of the year. The other dishes were OK, except for an over-cooked duck breast, but lacked sparkle. Perhaps the kitchen was preoccupied with private parties that evening?

      This was a special birthday celebration and no-one was disappointed. Read's lives up to its excellent reputation for fine dining.
